Today’s review isn’t of a recent book – on the contrary – but I wanted to share it with you nonetheless. Those of you who’ve read it probably know why. Those of you who haven’t.. Well, I’d say: keep reading!
Charlie is a freshman.
And while he’s not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it.
Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mix tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But he can’t stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.
Starting this book, I immediately fell for the format.
Our MC, Charlie, has written letters since the start of the school year in 1991 to a, to us, unknown receiver. Although we don’t know who this is exactly, it doesn’t ruin the story at all. I did, however, caught myself wondering who it was and what they did with all Charlie’s letters.
The writing itself felt disconnected to say the least. That might be a problem in other novels, but for this one? I’m convinced it fits perfectly. You simply know and feel that Charlie isn’t just a regular kid that goes through the motions of growing up, discovering life and trying out new things. There’s more to him than that. You honestly don’t need to read far into the novel to realize it.
“Charlie, we accept the love we think we deserve.”
To find out the reason he’s like that? Well, that’s something you only find out on the last couple of pages. I honestly didn’t have a clue. I couldn’t even think of a way for this book to end with a bang. But it did. It ended with a giant one that had me staring at the wall for about five minutes.
