As you might know, I’m not really a person who rereads books. Not unless I love them to bits and really do want to reread them at some point. Even then, though, I tend to.. not do that because all my unread books stare at me with these wicked eyes, blaming me for investing time in rereading books and not reading them. So… I pretty much never reread anything?
This year, that’s going to change. I added some rereading goals in my Books & Munches Reading Challenge 2018 and I really want to tick them off by the end of this year!
When I was thinking about that goal, I was also trying to figure out for myself what the reasons are for rereading books. My reasons.
I want to reread the Harry Potter-books and The Raven Cycle, both for completely different reasons.
Let’s start with The Raven Cycle.
I read them in 2017 after I kept seeing so many people go nuts about them, rave about them, hype them up like crazy. I wanted to know if it was worth all the attention but I… didn’t fall in love with them like so many others did? I shared this in my review of The Raven Boys and later on in a review of the rest of the series.
Suddenly a lot of people agreed with me that I might’ve not been in the right head space. That I should definitely give them a reread one day, when I really, really feel like reading them and see if I think about the books differently.
That, my friends, is the reason I want to reread them this year.
As for Harry Potter? Completely different reason altogether!
I have read the first three books numerous times, the other ones only once or twice and – here it comes – only in Dutch. I seriously never read the English books. Never. Do you know how often I have to look up names of characters? I know the names in Dutch, which are completely different from the English ones. Talking about those books with someone in English is… frustrating to say the least?
So apart from wanting to visit memory lane, indulge myself with some nostalgia… I just really want to read the English versions this time around.
Those are the two reasons that my brain accepts as “valid reasons” to invest my reading time in rereading. I do get that there are way more reasons than the two I mention. So I asked my Twitter-followers and Goodreads-friends for their reasons to reread books. Answers included a comparison between a book and a comfy chair – because yes, sometimes we need something we know we love and relaxes us -, because the next book in a series is about to be released, because it’s a favorite, if you really love certain characters / scenes and can’t say goodbye to those… Someone also mentioned rereading because she hated the book the first time around but is feeling generous and wants to give it another shot. So many, many reasons!
When do you decide to reread a book or series?
Does your brain also think some reasons aren’t “valid”?
Am I the only one feeling guilty for rereading books?
