And.. Well.. Better late than never, right? I shared my favorite fantasy and sci-fi of 2019 a while back, but I couldn’t pass up on sharing my contemporary favorites as well. So here goes! Note: I jotted down my favorite contemporary of each month, which means there are other contemporaries I loved very much as well, but.. maybe I’ll make a separate list for those!
THE REPRESENTATION I LOVED
~ SPEAK is easily one of the books that impacted me most in 2019. A story about rape, surviving it, reclaiming yourself and speaking up. I’m pretty sure this will be a book I’ll forever cherish on my shelves. Read my review here.
~ One of the first times I saw questioning queer rep in a book, was when reading SUMMER BIRD BLUE and I still love it all the more for just that reason. Apart from that, the representation of grief was heart-wrenching as well. An easy add to my “favorite” list! Read my full review here.
~ A book that deserves way more attention than it’s gotten so far, is – without a doubt – 100 DAYS OF SUNLIGHT, a book with a main character who’s blind. Representation of deaf / hearing impaired / blind people is something I’m always looking for in books. I was so happy when I came across this and even more so when I ended up loving it to pieces. Definitely worth adding to your TBR!
~ THE WEIGHT OF A THOUSAND FEATHERS is a book with a story I hadn’t seen before. Our main character is queer, has to take care of his little brother and.. on top of that? He has to take care of his dying mother who has a final wish he has difficulty coming to terms with. This was one heart-wrenching story to read, but it was oh so worth it.
THE COZY READS
~ 2019 is the year I finally read all the books in Jenny Han’s trilogy – TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE. I read those books in no time at all. They’re so cute and fluffy and.. I just loved reading them! It helps that the movie was.. actually surprisingly good as well. I can’t wait to see what the second one is like. You can read my review here!
~ AMERICAN ROYALS was another favorite of mine. The drama and intrigue with royalties is something I’m always a sucker for. Usually more in those romantic comedies around Christmas time, but.. apparently I can very much appreciate them outside of that and in bookish form as well! If you want to find out more, you can read my thoughts here!
~ THE START OF ME AND YOU is a book that didn’t make my absolute favorites, but it was a month’s favorite out of all the contemporaries I read back then. I liked the way friendships evolved, the nerdy side of our main character, and.. well.. that definitely makes it worth mentioning here! You can read more of my thoughts in my review.
~ If you want some cuteness in graphic novel-form, I can’t imagine you haven’t heard of HEARTSTOPPER yet. Those two volumes are gold. They’re so cute and heart-lifting and.. it’s just definitely something worth your time. Trust me on this.
PUNCHES IN THE GUT
~ When it comes to punches in the gut, INTERNMENT is a book to name. In my review, I talk about not knowing much about how things are in other countries and educating myself on that. This book helped me see things differently and.. I feel like that’s the reason this book will always be special to me. Read my review here!
~ I don’t read a lot of poetry, but it seems that when I do, I pick the good ones. THE POET X was my “good one” of 2019, with a story that grabbed my attention and had my flying through it in no time at all. Finding yourself, realizing there are things people can’t take from you and standing up for those things.. All subjects I came across in The Poet X. Find out more of my thoughts over here.
~ GIRL MANS UP is.. I just.. I think it was the first time I recognized something of my younger self in a book without the “being fat”-part being present. That alone makes me value this book and that alone makes me want to share it with all of you! Here’s my review.
