I DNF’D MY FIRST BOOK OF 2020 – WWW: January 29th

WWW Wednesday

It’s my first WWW of the year – and.. it’s the end of January.. Does this give you any idea on how I’m failing at blog life because I feel like I really am? On the other side, I’m still reading and that’s equally important, haha! I do miss my blog and talking bookish stuff and reading others’ blog posts but I simply.. cannot find the time?Hopefully I’ll end up figuring it out this year! I really, really hope so because there’s a lot of changes coming this year as well and I just don’t know how anymore but we’ll manage!

Anyway. You’re here to see what I’ve read lately and I’m here to share exactly that! And.. also to share my first DNF of 2020 – one I hadn’t expected. Let’s dive into this post!

As always, covers link back to the Goodreads-page, so feel free to check them out!

Current read

Foul Is FairMonstrous Devices

Talk about two very different books! I’m currently reading an eARC of Foul is Fair, which is a brutal and bloody story of a survivor out for revenge. I’m absolutely living for it. Although I have some issues with the book, I’m definitely all there for the story itself! My second read is a physical ARC of Monstrous Devices – huge thank you to Rock the Boat! – and.. it has tiny murderous robots? It had me spooked in the first couple chapters? I definitely like the fluidity of the events and the writing is easy to read as well.
Basically, I’m looking forward to reading more in these two, haha.

Finished reading

Capturing the Devil (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #4)Wild BeautyOff Script
Messy, Wonderful UsFeather (Angels of Elysium, #1)The Sky is MineA Pack of Love and Hate

I basically read two of my own books [Capturing the Devil and Wild Beauty] and.. all others were ARC’s? Talk about tackling the ARC’s head-on, right?! In short, I adored Capturing the Devil and Wild Beauty. The writing in the latter is whimsical and beautiful and I can’t wait to read more! As for Off Script, I posted my review last week so you can read all my thoughts here! And.. as for the other four? Those reviews are coming your way over the next couple of weeks! I do recommend checking out Feather if you’re into angels and fantasy; and you should without-a-doubt check out The Sky Is Mine for a heart-wrenching survivor-story.The Miseducation of Cameron Post

As for the book I DNF’d yesterday? Or actually, I put it aside before yesterday but the official “Goodreads-removal” happened yesterday.. is.. The Miseducation of Cameron Post and I’m honestly shocked myself! The book has such a high rating on Goodreads and I was looking forward to reading it but.. unfortunately I didn’t connect with the characters or the story or the writing? One huge case of “nope, not for me”.

Reading next

Uuh.. Probably more ARC’s? Which you can see an overview of a bit lower in this post. But if I have the opportunity to pick up one of my own books, It’ll probably be A Heart so Fierce and Broken because I need to know what happens. And why so many people seem to dislike this book?!

A Heart So Fierce and Broken (Cursebreakers, #2)

ARC overview

The Opposite of Falling ApartThe Two Lives of Lydia BirdOf Silver and ShadowThe Raven and the Dove (The Raven and the Dove, #1)
Of Curses and Kisses (St. Rosetta's Academy, #1)Salty, Bitter, SweetBelle RévolteFinding Balance (Brave Enough, #2)

Which one of my ARC’s would you pick up first?
How has your reading been this year?
Do you read daily? Every two days? Do you plan your reading time?

  1. It always stinks when a book you’ve been anticipating doesn’t live up and have to be DNFd. I also just DNFd my first book of the year the other day. Overall I know it’s not a bad book, it just wasn’t for me.

    1. Right? It’s a good thing to realize a book just isn’t for you as well. Looking back at last week, I think my DNF’ing The Miseducation is more due to my reading mood. I picked up a light, fluffy read after and flew through it so.. Maybe I just need some more light reading before diving into something more heavy. We’ll see! I might give it a second shot in the future!

Also, I hope the rest of the year goes better. The reading tone definitely doesn’t have to be set by a first “bad” read. 🙂

    2. Ha, that’s a never-ending discussion it seems. I always set myself the rule that if I don’t enjoy it 100 pages in, I’m allowed to toss the book aside without having to feel guilty about it. That rule has helped me a lot since sometimes the book’s picked up by that point.

    3. I do a similar thing. If it’s a longer book though, say over 500 pages, I’ll give it closer to 200 a lot of the time. If it hasn’t picked up when I’m almost half way through then it’s not going to get better

  2. Your book lists right now are so appealing to me! I just want to dive into your bookshelf – no lie. I really enjoyed The Miseducation of Cameron Post but I get why you might DNF it. It’s a tough book, but also really heavily-written I found? It’s a book you need to seriously commit to or else it’s just hard to get into.

    1. Haha! Bookshelf?! I have CASES. Multiple. It’s “horrible” [for my OH, not for me. 😛 ]
I knooow. Maybe I’ll pick it up again one day? My last reads proved I’m in the mood for some mindless, light reading so that might’ve been the thing to ruin The Miseducation for me.

  3. I want to hear more peoples thoughts on Of Curses and Kisses, to see if I want to give it a try. It seems like you’re still having a pretty good reading month/year so far, Kathy!

I do hope things get better and you get things figured out. I think I understand some of the stress and changes that you do (2020 wedding planning, right?) but definitely not all. I have faith that you and your OH will figure out a way to get through it. You got this!

    1. I’m curious to see how I’ll feel about it! I didn’t particularly love When Dimple Met Rishi, so it’s basically me giving the author a second chance.
Right?! I’ve also read a ton of ARCs already which is amazing in itself.

Thank you! Yup, wedding in November, but my mom also moved in with us a week ago so that’s.. a huuuuge change. My OH started evening classes (cooking ones, yum!) and I’m going to start a photography class in September if all goes right so.. yeah.. “Changes” might even be an understatement. 😛

    2. But yay, cooking classes and photography, those are things to be excited about. Also, you’ve just made me hungry, so I should probably go make something to eat, lol.
