A YA contemporary with a whole lot of darkness that struck a chord. So many subjects that are rarely spoken about or not represented often enough.. All combined in this book.
Oppression and racism is real in our world - for some more so than for others - and this book shows us how things could be. How we don't want things to be. How things already are in some places. Read it, is all I have to say.
The first thing popping to mind when I saw this book on NetGalley, was “I know this woman!” but I couldn’t remember where I’d seen her. It didn’t took me long to realize she played Precious in the movie Precious. As if I wasn’t convinced to read this one yet, that definitely did it. I was totally ready to find out how Gabourey Sidibe became an actress, how her life was before and after.
I had high hopes for Children of Blood and Bone, seeing I had heard so many good things about it already. Even though this is the author's debut and my expectations were still rather high, I never expected what I got. I never expected to be blown away like this.
My review on "Dear Martin" by Nic Stone.
